February is Black History Month and in todays' Shutter Sunday, I share a photo of what some might consider a miracle, but actually has a long history in Las Vegas: gardening and farming.
This photo is particularly significant as it is part of a garden patch in The Obodo Collective, an urban farm and community garden started during the COVID-19 pandemic that resides in the Historic Westside, a predominantly Black/African American community in the heart of Las Vegas. The area has faced what many other Black and African American communities have endured in the US: systemic racism, discrimination, and segregation. But that has not stopped this initiative from blossoming in the desert and offering nutritious fruits and vegetables for its community.
